Surgery – What To Expect

Surgery can be a daunting prospect. Rest assured that Better Bladders is committed to making your surgery experience as comfortable and stress-free as possible.

Below are some pointers to help you become familiar with what will happen leading up to, on the day of, and after your surgery.

Before your surgical procedure

  • Discuss your surgical options with your surgeon.
  • Talk about risks and benefits that are specific to you and complete your consent for your surgery.
  • Be advised of costs of the procedure.
  • You will be referred to your anaesthetist.
  • Book a date for your surgery.

On the day of your procedure

  • Fasting:
    • For local anaesthetic procedures, no fasting is required.
    • For procedures involving sedation or a general anaesthetic – fasting (no food, milk, chewing gum or lollies) is required for 6 hours prior to your procedure. You may drink clear fluids (water, cordial sports drink, black tea and coffee) up until 2 hours before your procedure. You must consume no liquids for the 2 hours leading up to your procedure.
  • Note that your hospital admission time will be earlier than your procedure time, to accommodate the checks and evaluations required prior to proceeding to theatre.

After your surgery

  • You will be discharged, with a letter outlining your procedure and post operative information.
  • A follow-up appointment will be booked.
  • If there are any concerns after your operation, you can call 08 8164 6360 during business hours on weekdays. After hours care can be accessed by calling Calvary North Adelaide Hospital directly, or attending the nearest emergency department.

If you have any questions or concerns before or after your surgery, please contact us on 08 8164 6360.
